Hyderabad, Jan 14 (IANS) Cyberabad Police have busted a global Rs 50 crore credit card scam and arrested an interstate gang of fraudsters consisting of seven members.
The defendants, from Delhi and Hyderabad, were deceiving foreign customers under the guise of providing technical services.
Cyber Crime Police at Cyberabad Police Station has made a breakthrough after busting a fake call center in Mohali, Punjab while investigating a complaint from Abdul Nayeem, authorized signatory of the control unit and HDFC bank credit information service, Hyderabad.
The plaintiff sued a merchant for multiple suspicious transactions made on the chip machine given to him. The transactions were made via 85 different international cards to the tune of Rs 64.40 lakh between 18 and 23 December 2021.
According to Cyberabad Police Commissioner Stephen Raveendra, the gang was involved in payment gateway fraud. The accused targeted residents of the UK, Singapore and Australia.
Those arrested were identified as Naveen Bhutani, Mohit and Monu, all residents of New Delhi. Nagaraju Bondada, Donthula Sravan Kumar, Sadhanala Mukkati Srinivasa Rao and Pavan Vennelakanti are all from Hyderabad. Police seized Rs 1.11 crore in cash, three four-wheeled vehicles, laptops, mobile phones, checkbooks and debit cards.
Naveen Bhutani, with the help of Monu, established three call centers at various locations like Janakpuri of New Delhi, Kaushambi of Ghaziabad and Mohali of Punjab to deceive customers under the guise of providing technical services. Naveen runs Google ad campaigns with its contact numbers in Australia, UK and Singapore for its companies providing technical services to solve problems related to PayPal, Amazon and technical devices like router, internet.
When customers responded to Google Ads, callers would remotely access their devices to resolve the issue. They collected payments through payment gateway links provided by Mohit.
Police said Mohit was collecting payment gateway links from Nagaraju and Srinivas offering them a 50% commission. Nagaraju used to collect defrauded amounts through bank accounts linked to payment gateways and forward them to Mohit after deducting his commission and taxes.
The defendants also tricked the victims through inbound calls generated by phishing emails or text messages regarding one of their recent purchases. Customers ended up making transactions from their account. When accessing remotely, they also capture card credentials and use them for subsequent transactions, as OTPs or PINs are not needed for international transactions.
Naveen and his associates were also tricking customers in these countries into obtaining their cell phone numbers and transaction history through various websites after calling them to have the OTP sent to their cell phones. By informing the callers that their email accounts are compromised, the defendants were offering technical services by asking them to make a payment. During this process, they were also collecting customers’ card credentials such as card number, expiration, and CVV for later use. The defendants made payments using these cards during the night hours of the customers’ respective countries so that the customers could not block the card or report fraud.
