Passengers traveling on the Metrolinx Union Pearson Airport (UP) Express rail link in the Canadian city of Toronto can now choose to pay their fares with their contactless debit card as part of the agency’s trial of its Presto open payment ticketing system.
Metrolinx launched the trial in March and initially allowed passengers to make payments using a contactless credit card or mobile wallet at the start and end of their trip instead of purchasing a Presto transport card or electronic ticket.
âCustomers can now press Interac debit, and Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard issued internationally, or by adding these cards compatible with these payment methods to their mobile wallets and typing with their phone or smart watch, âsays Metrolinx.
âThis not only means more choice and convenience for UP customers, but it is also the first time that a transit agency in Canada has offered a Canadian contactless debit option as a payment method. “
âWhen a customer uses an Interac debit card at the start of a trip, a temporary $ 15 pre-authorization may be placed on that card, even if the actual fare is lower,â adds Metrolinx.
âThis amount can be withheld by their bank until Presto calculates the actual price of the trip and debits the customer’s bank account. The final charges should usually appear – and any unnecessary funds should be released – within 24 hours. “
Metrolinx initially announced plans to test an open-payment contactless ticketing system in November 2019.
