Number of registered online banking customers declines by 4.7% in 2021 – BoG

The number of registered online banking customers decreased by 4.77% to 970,435 in 2021, compared to 2020, the annual Bank of Ghana Payments Systems Monitoring Report has revealed.

Registered mobile banking customers also declined to 4.062 million in 2021 from 4.767 million in 2020.

The value of internet banking transactions, however, increased significantly by 132.30% to 56.24 billion yen in 2021.

The value of mobile banking transactions was ¢26.11 billion in 2021, compared to ¢12.94 billion in 2020, a growth of 101.78%.

ATMs and points of sale

The report states that the number of ATMs deployed by banks at the end of December 2021 was 2,278, which represents an increase of 1.83% compared to the 2020 position.

The number of point-of-sale terminals deployed also increased by 20.54% to 12,643 in December 2021, compared to 10,489 at the end of December 2020.

Debit cards

The total number of debit cards issued by banks in December 2021 was 4.936 million, an increase of 2.56% compared to 2020.

Cards from the international regime at the end of December 2021 were 3,647,285 and represented 73.89% of the total debit cards issued, compared to 1,288,961 proprietary cards from the banks, which constituted 26.11% of the total debit cards issued .

Cards from the international regime increased by 2.56%, while bank proprietary cards decreased by 21.62% in 2021.

Credit card

The number of credit cards issued at the end of December 2021 increased to 36,237 cards in 2021, compared to 33,039 cards in December 2020.

The increase in the number of credit cards issued was due to additional banks being authorized by the Bank of Ghana to issue credit cards. All credit cards issued were international cards.
