Rogers outage causes Canadian banks to close ATMs, POS and internet banking services

Interac, a Canadian e-transfer service, is currently down due to issues with network provider Rogers.

Interac provides transactional services for payments exchanged between financial institutions and businesses. The service is used by several Canadian banks, including Desjardins, Tangerine, National Bank and HSBC Bank Canada.

The company tweeted“There is a nationwide outage from Rogers that encompasses all of their business and consumer network services. This is impacting INTERAC Debit and INTERAC e-Transfer. INTERAC Debit is currently unavailable online and at checkout.

Downdetector Canada is currently showing an increasing number of bank outage reports from CIBC, RBC, Scotiabnk, TD Bank and BMO. The network issues stem from the cellular and internet service provider, Rogers. Rogers users in Toronto have filed more than 15,000 complaints, with others coming from Montreal, Ottawa, Brampton and other parts of the country.

The outage impacts wire transfers and Interac machines nationwide, as well as ATMs and cellular devices.

Authorities are currently trying to resolve the issue, although the timeline is uncertain.

Last year, Interac worked with Walmart Canada to add Interac debit payment options for shoppers.
